Colleague hopeful Irish priest will be released

A COLLEAGUE of missing Irish priest Fr Michael Sinnott last night remained "hopeful" for his safe release despite no firm evidence of movement by his kidnappers to release him.

The whereabouts of the Wexford-born cleric remained shrouded in mystery last night, with a "stalemate" emerging between his captors and the authorities in the Philippines.

Fr Dan O'Malley of the Columban order told the Irish Independent last night that they received "no solid information" about Fr Sinnott's status or location.

But he said he was positive about a successful outcome to the ordeal for the Wexford-born priest. "I am hopeful," he said, "but we'd prefer today rather than tomorrow".

Concern has focussed on Fr Sinnott's physical condition as he had a quadruple heart bypass four years ago and needs to take daily medication to remain in good health.

It was reported at the time of his kidnapping from the Columban compound in the city of Pagadian that armed rebels bundled him into a van and later took him away from the area by speedboat.

Separatist Islamic factions are believed to be holding the elderly priest.
