Polish German bishops plead for peace at WW2 anniversary

The Polish and German Roman Catholic Bishops' Conferences in a joint declaration to mark the 70th anniversary of the start of the Second World War have issued a plea for peace.

In a six-page statement, before the 1 September anniversary, the bishops dwelled on the long and difficult road, lasting decades, to achieve reconciliation between the two nations.

On 1 September 1939, Germany's Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler ordered his army to invade Poland, starting the six-year long Second World War, involving most nations on earth and killing tens of millions of people.
