GAA Matches are Hitting Mass Attendance

A priest has criticised the GAA for holding Saturday evening games that clash with Mass times saying they are hitting attendances.

Popular curate Fr Kevin McNamara (54) noticed a smaller than usual congregation at St Mary’s cathedral in Killarney County Kerry on a number of occasions last month which he blamed on football and hurling fixtures.

He said, “On some Saturday evenings you had live TV games from three-thirty until eight. That’s going a bit too far when you think that those games are clashing with Saturday evening vigil masses that are held in most villages and towns. I noticed numbers in the Cathedral were down on Saturday evening. It could be that some people are on holidays but the live GAA games on the TV are also a major factor.”

The County Clare born priest who has been based in Killarney for five years said he expects more games to be broadcast on RTE and TV3 on Saturday evenings.

Fr McNamara called on all GAA supporters to lobby their clubs on the issue who should in turn raise the matter with GAA bosses.

He added, “Everybody loves the GAA - I’m a big fan myself - but surely our faith can come first sometimes, especially on a Saturday evening.”
