Priest arrested in prostitution sting faces three charges

The Rev. Leslie Douglas Campbell, the Catholic priest arrested in Oak Park during a prostitution sting last week, will be arraigned in municipal court on Aug. 27.

Campbell, 64, faces misdemeanor charges of lewd and lascivious behavior, public nudity and remaining in a park after hours, court documents show.

He has been placed on what Bishop Michael Jackels called "a temporary leave from his ministerial duties to receive counseling and help for his spiritual renewal."

Campbell was ordained a priest in 1976 and has served as parish priest at St. Jude Catholic Church since 1998.

He was one of seven people — five men and two women — who were arrested in the sting that stretched from 10 p.m. Aug. 6 to 7 a.m. Aug. 7.

He was arrested with a 46-year-old man at about 3:30 a.m. in Oak Park, police said.
