Catholics Give Thousands to Overturn Gay Marriage Law

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland says parishioners put $41,000 in collection plates last month at masses around the state.

Collections taken up in Catholic church masses last month netted $41,000 for the campaign to overturn the state's new same-sex marriage law, according to a press release sent out today by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland.

The talley is of money put into church collection plates, and doesn't include money parishioners chose to put in envelopes to be sent directly to the Stand for Marriage Maine campaign, which is spearheading the drive to repeal the new law.

The Diocese says the contributions are detailed in a campaign finance report filed with the Maine Ethics Commission. The reports for the period are officially due next week.

According to the release, the Diocese also contributed $33,000 for in-kind services, which include salaries for two employees who are on a leave of absence and whose time is being donated to the campaign.
