Gerard (Ger) Fitzgerald will be ordained to the Diaconate on Sunday 30th May at St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth.
Ordination to the Diaconate is one of the final steps a student takes on the journey to being ordained a priest.
At next Sunday’s ceremony Ger will be asked to make a commitment to serve the Church as a deacon.
In this role he will be able to preside over some of the sacramental ceremonies of the Church such as Baptism and Marriage.
He will also be taking on a commitment to pray daily for and on behalf of the people of God and to assist the ministry of the Church in whatever duties he is given by the Bishop.
Ger will engage in this ministry as his final preparation for the commitment to Priesthood which he hopes to make within the coming year.
Ger is a native of Castleconnell, Co. Limerick.
He is 30 years of age and is the son of Mary and Patrick Fitzgerald and brother of Anthony. He was educated at Castleconnell N.S. and in St. Mary's Convent Newport, Co. Tipperary.
Following his Leaving Certificate he worked in various places including Dublin and Limerick.
He began his studies for the priesthood at St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth in 2005.
He studied two years of Philosophy and also completed a Pastoral Theology Course and a unit of Clinical & Pastoral Education.
He is currently in year two of a three year BD Theology course.
