Catholic bishops who shelter abusers go unpunished

The latest Roman Catholic sex abuse scandals in Europe and beyond are drawing more attention to bishops who failed to protect children.

More bishops in Europe already have resigned for keeping predators in ministry than throughout the U.S. abuse crisis.

Only one U.S. prelate, Boston Cardinal Bernard Law, has stepped down for mishandling cases of guilty priests.

In Ireland, four bishops have resigned over a government-ordered inquiry into the Archdiocese of Dublin.

The report released last year found church leaders hid abusers from civil authorities.

Still, the Vatican has only accepted two of the resignations so far.

Experts say the push for any bishop to resign must come from the Vatican itself.
