Fr Ryan told Nine News he was driving on Monday afternoon when another car pulled up alongside him at a set of lights.
The driver and front seat passenger both started to abuse him as two children sitting in the back seat watched. He was tailgated in a bizzare pursuit, the report said, for the next hour as he drove through five suburbs and past two police stations in a bid for help.
When the passenger in the other car jumped into his, Fr Ryan said he feared he was about to be killed.
"(I thought) this is the end of the life of John Ryan, I was quite convinced that I was about to die," he said.
But the driver got back out of the priest's vehicle and into his and the pursuit continued. The ordeal ended at a set of lights near Cannington police station, south-west of Perth, when the passenger again jumped into Fr Ryan's car.
"The door opened and he jumped in and he got in almost on top of me and made a gesture like he was going to bash me," the priest reportedly said.
But the passenger did not say a word, instead stealing Fr Ryan's car keys before taking off.
Fr Ryan believes his age made him a target but can't think of any other reason why he was targeted.
"I really don't think they had any other motive than to have a sick joke," he said.
