Xavier College accused of bullying coverup

Xavier College in Melbourne is being accused of covering up a bullying episode, for which the victim's parents are threatening to sue unless the school refunds two years of fees and covers the cost of counselling, a report said.

It is claimed the year 6 boy, who still receives counselling, was "dacked" five times and threatened with sexual assault at the school's junior campus in April, the Sunday Herald Sun reported, but the school allegedly failed to act on the case when it was notified by the boy and his mother.

He had previously been bullied, according to the newspaper report.

The boy has since moved schools and has taken out intervention orders against the two bullies involved.

The boy's family plans to sue unless the school refunds two years of fees and covers the cost of counselling, but Xavier is refusing to refund the fees, the report said.

Acting principal Father Gerry Healy said the actions of the bullies were inappropriate. He denied the boy was threatened with sexual assault. The bullies got detention.

"The boys recognised what they did was wrong and were very sorry for what had happened," he said.

School authorities have discussed the incident with the boy's family, Fr Healy was quoted as saying.
