“Creideamh was very favourably received by everyone and the clergy and one of the organisers said it was the best two weeks of his life. There were great testimonies and great stories of people who came along,” Rob Clarke, Project Manager, tells ciNews.
The mission was coordinated by TINE, a network of lay groups in Ireland, with 300 of their number and people from the local churches involved in four parish missions and an outreach on the streets of Galway.
“There is a lot of talk about the new evangelisation but it is a bit of a challenge is to mobilise people and to actually get people over the threshold where they are really engaging with their neighbours or meeting people on the street and sharing their faith. Creideamh was significant in that it mobilised 300 people to evangelise - they were out there doing it,” says Rob Clarke.
“It was an event that created the momentum and the community support to get people involved in evangelisation. The overwhelming feeling from those people was how liberating it was to actually reach out to people and realise they really have something to say and a story to share and that people are more interested than they would imagine.”
There was adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and confession on Eyre Square, talks and question and answer sessions on faith in various venues, visits to people’s homes, as well as face painting, singing and entertainment during Creideamh. 25,000 copies of the special mission newspaper were distributed during the 10-day event and in it; many of groups and courses were advertised.
“Local groups and those who were involved in organising Creideamh are running courses in the four main parishes in Galway. That is really going into action in September for many of the courses,” Rob Clarke explains.
Among the groups and activities that are taking place are a six-week course developed by Catholic Evangelisation Service entitled, “Knowing God Better.”
Another is a course by Alpha Questions of Life addressing some key issues of faith for today.
In addition, Mother’s Prayers, The Ark Prayer Group, and An Tobar Nua all have programmes planned.
