Extend servers' age limit: society

A body working to promote vocations has suggested allowing Mass-servers to continue in that role until their teens towards fostering future vocations.

Speaking on behalf of the St Joseph's Young Priests Society this week, the group's president, Mary Hogan, said the novel idea had the potential to ''help young people who feel they might have a vocation''.

''Mass-servers play a crucial role in the Church,'' Ms Hogan said, ''and we felt that it was counter-productive to take young people out of this position just as they are getting to an age when they can seriously consider a vocation.''

Allowing for service up to the age of 17 or 18, she suggested, would allow a young person to fully explore the possibility of a vocation.

Pilgrimage

Over 7,000 members and friends of the St Joseph's Young Priests Society are expected to congregate at Knock Shrine on June 27 for their annual pilgrimage, where they will pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood and religious life.

Over 50 Mass-Servers will take part in the pilgrimage.
