The International Commission on English in the Liturgy (ICEL), yesterday sent to the Bishops of its 11 member Conferences, its draft translation of the Roman Missal that was first published in Latin in 2002.Known as the “Green Book”, due to the colour of its cover, Bishops are invited to comment on the draft before a final proposed version, which will be released as a “Grey Book”.
The ICEL’s final version of the text will then be sent to Bishops’ Conferences for its canonical vote - it must be approved by a two-thirds majority - before being forwarded to Rome for recognition.
Consultation is shaping the new English text is highly encouraged as a wide range of issues, both theological and linguistic, have been brought to the attention of the Commission, who in response have sought to shape texts that will meet the needs of the worldwide English-speaking Catholic community.
The Bishops who receive the “Green Book” are free to consult anyone they wish. Comments are also solicited from the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, who are able to draw on the expertise of a wide range of people.
The process of consultation will continue and is expected to be completed by the end of 2008.
A complete translation of the 2002 Missale Romanum will then be available to members of the conference.
It will be their task to adapt the text to meet their own local needs, of its voting members, and to submit it to the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments for the Holy See’s recognition.
