Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo

Archbishop Daniel N. DiNardo became the ordinary or chief shepherd of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston on February 28, 2006 when Pope Benedict XVI officially approved the retirement of Archbishop Joseph A. Fiorenza. DiNardo was welcomed as Coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese of Galveston-Houston on March 26, 2004.

The appointment by Pope John Paul II made him the immediate successor to Bishop Fiorenza as the pastoral leader of the 1.3 million Catholics in the Diocese of Galveston-Houston. When Galveston-Houston was designated an archdiocese by Pope John Paul II on December 29, 2004, Bishop DiNardo was also elevated to archbishop coadjutor.

Archbishop DiNardo was born in Steubenville, Ohio, on May 23, 1949, the son of Nicholas and Jane (Green) DiNardo. He has a twin sister, Margaret, and older brother, Thomas, and a younger sister, Mary Anne. After the family moved to Pittsburgh, he attended St. Anne Grade School, Castle Shannon, Pa. (1955-1963), the Bishop’s Latin School, a Jesuit school in Pittsburgh (1963-1967), and then entered St. Paul Seminary and Duquesne University (1967-1969). In 1969 he won a Basselin Scholarship for Philosophy studies at the Catholic University of America and there obtained a B.A. and M.A. Degree in Philosophy.

His theological studies were taken at the North American College, Rome, where he earned the S.T.B. Degree at the Gregorian University and the S.T.L Degree in Patristics at the Augustinianum.

Archbishop DiNardo was ordained a priest on July 16, 1977 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and assigned to St. Pius X Church, Pittsburgh, as Parochial Vicar. In 1981 he was named Assistant Chancellor of the Diocese of Pittsburgh and part-time Professor at St. Paul Seminary.

In 1984 he was named a staff member of the Congregation for Bishops at the Vatican in Rome, Italy where he remained until December 1990. During that time, he was also Director of the Villa Stritch (1986-1989), the house for American Diocesan priests who work for the Holy See, and also taught the Methodology Seminar for first year Theologians at the Gregorian University. In 1991 he was named Assistant Secretary for Education of the Diocese of Pittsburgh and also served as Co-Administrator of Madonna del Castello Church in Swissvale, Pa.

In 1994, he was named founding Pastor of Sts. John and Paul Church in Franklin Park-Marshall Township, Pa. He was named Coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese of Sioux City on August 19, 1997 and ordained bishop on October 7, 1997. He became Diocesan Ordinary on November 28, 1998.

Archbishop DiNardo currently serves on the Ad Hoc Committee to Oversee the Use of the Catechism for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. He also serves as the USCCB Advisor to the National Association of Pastoral Musicians.

He is a member of the Board of Directors of Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., and the National Catholic Partnership for Persons with Disabilities, Washington, D.C.
