Tributes to car crash priest

Tributes have been paid to Fr Roger Kinane, the 83-year old priest who was killed last week in a car accident in Co Tipperary.

Fr Kinane, who served as a missionary in Nigeria for many years, died in South Tipperary General Hospital in Clonmel from injuries sustained in the collision at Parkstown, Horse and Jockey, on the main N8 Dublin-Cork road.

It subsequently emerged that he was returning from a funeral in Urlingford of a family friend when the accident occurred.

One of 11 children, he was ordained in 1951 as a member of St Patrick's Missionary Society in Kiltegan, Co Wicklow, on the same day as his brother Philip, who served in the archdiocese of Cashel and Emly until his death six years ago.

A second brother, Fr Willie Kinane, ministers in Sacramento, California while a sister, Kathleen, is a member of the Cross and Passion order in South America.

After his retirement from his parish in Port Harcourt, returned to his native Rossmore in Co Tipperary and lived with his sister-in-law Eileen Kinane.

A keen sports fan, he was a Life-President of Clonoulty Rossmore GAA Club and attended many Tipperary Senior training sessions.

He was jubilant when his Clonoulty Rossmore team won the West Senior Hurling Final.

When he came home from Nigeria for three months every summer he spent much of his time attending matches.

Neighbour Joe Hammersley said Fr Kinane was "a passionate GAA man" who went to matches “every day that he could, college matches, schools' matches, juvenile matches, it didn't matter”.

Rossmore parish priest Fr James Fogarty said the deceased priest was “a very nice homely man and was very well known in the area".

Fr Kinane is survived by his brothers Peter, John, Fr Willie and sisters Peggy, Mary and Sr Kathleen.
