The musical production, which will open at the London Palladium, on Tuesday June 2, 2009, is directed by Peter Schneider.It will be based on the international hit film, The Sister Act, which starred Whoopi Goldberg as the vivacious Deloris Van Cartier, a nun living in the convent as a part of the witness protection program.
She starts to feel at home when she reinvents the church choir, creating a newfound sense of sisterhood.
"I really liked the direction they were going in," said Goldberg. "It (the film) is almost 20 years old. Rather than have someone repeat what was, you have to take it and redo it. That's what they've done and they've done it really well."
The show will feature the musical talents of composer Alan Menken, eight-time Oscar winner who worked on songs from the Disney movies The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Enchanted and The Beauty and the Beast.
Goldberg will not be performing in the show herself, but will be an essential part in the show's running and success by producing. "If you are fortunate enough to be a part of something wonderful, I feel it's important to pass the baton," she said.
"The best way for me to be a part of this new incarnation of Sister Act is to make sure everyone knows it's happening. The stage version of the show is fresh and new and I'm beyond thrilled to be part of it."
Joop Van Den Ende, president of the supervisory board of Stage Entertainment is excited about working with Goldberg on the show. "I am delighted to be working with Whoopi to bring Sister Act to the historic London Palladium," he said.
"I have long admired her work and, as a theatrical producer, have wanted to bring Deloris, one of her classic roles, to the stage for a long, long time."
"With the whole Stage Entertainment group focused on next summer's opening, we cannot wait to get working with our world class creative team on this unique and exciting project," said Van Den Ende.
