Pope worried over nuns abducted in Kenya

The Vatican says Pope Benedict XVI has expressed concern over the fate of two Roman Catholic nuns kidnapped in Kenya earlier this month.

The two Italian nuns — Maria Teresa Olivero, 60, and Caterina Giraudo, 67 — were working on hunger and health programs in Kenya. Gunmen kidnapped them Nov. 10 and took them across the border into lawless Somalia.

The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said in a statement Thursday that "the Holy Father is following the protraction of their kidnapping with concern."

The pontiff expressed hope that "this painful and gravely unjust situation, of which entirely innocent and praiseworthy people are victims, may be resolved as soon as possible," according to the statement.
