Pope Benedict XVI decries atrocities in Congo

Pope Benedict XVI is calling for peace efforts to stop what he calls "systematic atrocities" in Congo, and encouraging help for swelling number of refugees from fighting in that African country.

Benedict told pilgrims in St. Peter's Square Sunday that he is giving his blessing to church workers and other people who are trying to ease the suffering of the refugees.

He said he was making a fervent appeal so that all sides will work to restore peace.

Doctors in Congo are warning that a cholera outbreak could worsen among refugees from fighting between Congo's army and rebels led by a renegade general.

Witnesses have said rebels looted and burned homes and shot many people execution style in the head.
