Pope Benedict XVI underwent a successful surgery after he fractured his right wrist on Friday in a fall while on holiday in the Italian Alps.
Hospital sources told Adnkronos Salute that the pontiff is in good health.
The surgery was carried out by a medical team directed by Manuel Mancini of the orthopaedic department at the Umberto Parini hospital in the northwestern Italian city of Aosta.
The Vatican said in a statement that the pope fell last night while in his room, but that before going to the hospital, the pontiff "celebrated mass and had breakfast."
Meanwhile, the mayor of Rome, Gianni Alemanno as well as the president of the Italian senate Roberto Schifani and others wished the pontiff a speedy recovery.
"I wish a speedy recovery to our Holy Father, Benedict XVI and also would like to express him our sympathies on behalf of the city of Rome," said a telegram sent by Alemanno to the Vatican's secretary of state, Tarcisio Bertone.
The pontiff is in the Val D'Aosta region, located in the Italian Alps for a 16-day vacation that began on 13 July.
