Year of Evangelisation begins in Dublin

It has its own song, logo, prayer and office.

The Archdiocese of Dublin Year of Evangelisation is ready to go and started on the feast of Sts Peter and Paul.

"The hope of the Year of Evangelisation is that all people will deepen their relationship with Christ and that will be reflected in the way we live our lives in parish and in society,” Archbishop Martin says in his message for the year.

The Diocesan Commission for Sacred Music in association with the Year of Evangelisation has invited submissions from composers for a new hymn/song to mark the occasion.

A competition was held in the National College of Art and Design to design an appropriate logo to use extensively during the Year.

Rebecca Roughneen, a final year student, won the competition as it was felt she captured the vision. Rebecca took as her inspiration a text from St. Mark’s Gospel – The Calming of the Storm (Mark 4: 35-41). This was of special significance as there are plans to publish a copy of St. Luke’s Gospel for distribution throughout the diocese.

The Office of Evangelisation has invited Parish Pastoral Councils to consider how they might participate in the Year of Evangelisation. There is a flyer that parishes can use to commence reflection on "What is evangelisation?”

Any one oranizing an event that comes under the vision of Evangelisation can have it advertised.

The office is also inviting suggestions for events that might give a special focus during the year under any of the following categories – Prayer, Catechesis, Service, Scripture and Sacraments.

A pastoral plan is being prepared. Three parishes in Tallaght have hosted a new Mission and have had the Emmanuel School of Evangelisation outreach to people in the locality.

The Office of Evangelisation is staffed by a dedicated team who will consult, advise, lead and develop methods and means of evangelisation throughout the year.

But when all is said and done what is Evangelisation?

Organisers say it starts with a personal encounter with Jesus Christ. It is people’s ongoing response to the presence of God in their lives and their efforts to share that Good News with others.

Evangelisation is a life long journey which is nurtured through prayer, catechesis, service, Scripture and the Sacraments.

It is hoped that the Year of Evangelisation will provide a focussed opportunity to re-energise and renew each person and parish community to live and proclaim the Gospel in challenging times.

Evangelisation is

  • an essential mission of the Church
  • “is the most powerful and stirring challenge which the Church has been called to face from her very beginning.” (Veritatas Splendor 106)
  • is about proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ,
  • starts with being evangelised ourselves; with a personal encounter with Jesus Christ and conversion to his vision and way of life,
  • is being called to bring the values and demands of the Gospel into every sphere of human life and activity,
  • develops communities that are characterized by a sense of mission and a search for justice,
  • forms the Church.

Meanwhile on Saturday, (June 27th) three men were ordained to priesthood at the Pro Cathedral (two for the Diocese of Dublin and one for the Carmelite order), and thirteen parish pastoral workers were commissioned into their new roles in parishes.

Speaking at the event, the Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Diarmuid Martin said the legacy of scandals had "seriously damaged the image and the credibility of the Church."

"Yet the Spirit is with the Archdiocese of Dublin and the Spirit is renewing the Archdiocese of Dublin and we know that the Spirit will sustain and renew the Church in its mission today, tomorrow and for the years to come."

He urged the new priests, Fr Colin Rothery from Kilmacud, Fr Aloysius Zuribo from Nigeria and Fr Stephen Kim (OFM Capuchin) from Korea to “Never be ashamed of witnessing to the Lord".
