Pope urges politicians to protect human life

Pope Benedict XVI told the speaker of the US house of representatives Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday that Catholic politicians have a duty to protect human life "at all stages of its development."

Pelosi, an Italo-American Catholic who supports abortion rights, met the pope at the Vatican on Wednesday during an official visit to Italy.

After her audience with the pontiff, the Vatican released Benedict's remarks which reinforced the Catholic church's support for "dignity of human life from conception to natural death".

"His Holiness took the opportunity to speak of the requirements of natural moral law and the church's consistent teaching on the dignity of human life from conception to natural death which enjoin all Catholics, and especially legislators, jurists and those responsible for the common good of society," the Vatican said in a statement.

The Vatican said the pope called on these parties to work in co-operation with all men and women of good will in creating "a just system of laws capable of protecting human life at all stages of its development".

The Vatican is reported to be displeased that US President Barack Obama overturned a ban on using US dollars to fund abortions overseas in his first days in office.

The Vatican also opposes support from the US government for studies involving human embryonic stem cells.
