Kidnap priest plans Christmas visit home

KIDNAPPED priest Fr Michael Sinnott is planning a month-long return to Ireland at Christmas to catch up with family and friends following his 31-day ordeal.

The Columban father is still recuperating in the Philippines capital, Manila, a week after his release from captivity.

He said yesterday he intended to return to missionary work in the southern Philippines city of Pagadian, but only after a month's holiday in Ireland to meet his loved ones.

"That's one of the reasons to go home, to assure them I'm alive and well," he said from the Columban order's base in Manila.

"And to thank the people of Ireland for all their prayers and good wishes. It has amazed me and humbled me."

Fr Sinnott also told of his heartbreak on hearing the news, on the morning of his release from captivity, that his niece Eithne Sinnott -- to whom he was close -- had passed away.

After the grief of burying their relative a week before Fr Sinnott was set free, his family's mood turned to jubilation when word came through that his ordeal had ended.
