Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades of the Diocese of Harrisburg (Pa.) will become the ninth bishop of the Fort Wayne-South Bend Diocese, retiring Bishop John M. D'Arcy announced at a news conference this morning.The new bishop would oversee a diocese that stretches across 14 counties in northern Indiana, encompassing 80 parishes. About 13,000 students attend diocesan schools.
The naming of a new bishop has been widely anticipated since D'Arcy submitted a mandatory letter requesting retirement to Pope Benedict XVI on his 75th birthday in 2007.
A native of Boston, D'Arcy was installed as bishop in May of 1985.
The new bishop will be installed Jan. 13, 2010.
