Archbishop Clifford receives top GAA award

The Archbishop of Cashel & Emly has received a top County Tipperary GAA Award.

Dr Dermot Clifford whose archdiocese includes much of County Tipperary as well as the county Limerick parishes of Galbally, Kilbehenny and Anglesboro as well as the Diocese of Cloyne in Cork has been nominated by the Mid board for a Sean Gael award which honours GAA personnel in the county who have passed their 70th birthday.

The Kerry native who once taught in the famous Killarney football nursery Saint Brendan's was nominated by the Mid board as the Archbishops residence is in Thurles.

On Sunday evening November 1st last, 34 Tipperary people - 8 from each division including two handballers - were presented with their awards at the Dome at Semple Stadium in Thurles.

According to Tipperary GAA County board chairman Clogheen native Barry O’Brien, “Archbishop Clifford despite his busy work load never fails to answer the call to be present at many varied GAA functions throughout the year. His visits to the training sessions of Tipperary county teams prior to big matches is an age old tradition commenced by the late Archbishop Kinnane and is very much appreciated by the County Board.”

Dr Clifford is also the National Patron of the GAA and presents the all-Ireland Minor Cups in both hurling and football each year.
