Author Kelly claims TV3 interview "one hell of a barney"

Hermann Kelly, the author of a book claiming to expose false allegations of abuse, has said that Tuesday's TV interview between himself and Kathy O'Beirne, was “one hell of a barney”.

The interview, on TV3's Ireland AM, pitted Ms O'Beirne author of the best selling novel, Kathy's Story against Hermann Kelly who has written a book discrediting her book: Kathy's Real Story: a culture of false allegations exposed?

Ms O'Beirne's sister, Mary, was also present. Mary insists that Kathy's allegations of abuse against their father, are false.

But the show soon descended into farce as both sets of protagonists came to blows. In scenes more reminiscent of the US Jerry Springer Show than a normal newscast, discussion of the book's merits was soon replaced by traded insults and physical assault.

Also appearing with Ms O'Beirne was Michael Sheridan, who ghost wrote the book Kathy's Story, which catalogues allegations made by Ms O'Beirne.

Ms O'Beirne's sister, Mary, said that Mr Sheridan's claim that her father sexually abused Kathy was false. “My father was not a monster,” she said.

Ms O'Beirne then challenged her to take a lie detector test, which she said she had already done.

Mr Kelly offered evidence on the show, which he said validated his claim that she was 51, rather than 45 as she claimed.

According to Mr Kelly, Ms O'Beirne has also made allegations against a Dominican priest, Fr Fergal O'Connor.

Ms O'Beirne vigourously denied this on yesterday's programme, although Mr Kelly said that he had documents to prove that she had made such claims, and proceeded to produce them.

Writing in yesterday's Irish Daily Mail, he also said that Ms O'Beirne had defamed him on Tuesday's show and that the show's presenter, Mark Cagney had warned her not to repeat this claim on the programme.

Ms O'Beirne then proceeded, Mr Kelly claimed, to attempt to seize some of his documentation, proving the claims in his book.

He finished by saying that his book about Ms O'Beirne, entitled Kathy's Real Story “will not be silenced, and neither will I”.

Kathy's Real Story: a culture of false allegations exposed? is published and on sale in bookshops and through the internet, priced €15.
