Hingham Catholic school won’t admit lesbians’ son

A Roman Catholic school in Massachusetts has withdrawn its acceptance of an 8-year-old boy with lesbian parents.

A parent of the boy said the Rev. James Rafferty, the parish priest at Saint Paul Elementary School in Hingham, told her Monday that her relationship was "in discord" with church teachings.

A spokesman for the Boston Archdiocese says the archdiocese learned about the school’s decision late Tuesday.

He said the archdiocese is talking with Rafferty and the school’s principal to learn more.

The woman, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of concerns about the effect on her son, said she didn’t expect the church to approve of her relationship.

But she said the school was discriminating against her son, and she doesn’t feel that is right.

A similar situation arose earlier this year in Colorado.
