Anger over the death of abuse whistleblower

A victims group is blaming the Catholic Church for the death of a man who helped expose a sexually abusive Tasmanian priest.

Derrum Kearns died in Adelaide last week.

He was abused as a teenager by Monsignor Philip Green.

He later became addicted to opiates and suffered post traumatic stress.

A spokesman for Beyond Abuse Steve Fisher says there was little support for Mr Kearns after a protracted and damaging battle with the church.

"This has to be a wake-up call to the Catholic Church in Tasmania and Archbishop Doyle has to get his act together and actually start doing something proactive to stop tragic things like this happening again."

In a statement, Archbishop Adrian Doyle says he was saddened to hear of the death of Mr Kearns.

He says he has been in contact with Mr Kearns' father and expressed his condolences to the family.

Archbishop Doyle says he does not think there is any value in debating the motivation behind Mr Kearns' death.
