The town of Nenagh in North Tipperary looks set to honour the oldest active member of the Columban Order. Fr Dan Fitzgerald will celebrate 70 years as a priest on November 29th next with a special mass at Our Lady of the Rosary Church in the town.
A native of Cork City ninety-three year old Fr Dan has been stationed in Nenagh for the past twenty years and was recently honoured as an exceptional achievement category award winner from Nenagh Town council.
Fr Dan was ordained at Christmas in 1939 and attributes his vocation to the priesthood to the influence of his parents who attended daily mass, said the rosary each evening and gave him an outlook that the things of this world were not as important as the things of the next.
Fr Dan served overseas in the Philippines, China, Nottingham and Scotland. He was particularly delighted to serve in China as he served as secretary to the founder of the Columban Fathers, Bishop Ned Galvin.
Fr Fitzgerald was appointed by the late Bishop William Harty of the Diocese of Killaloe to the Parish of Nenagh in 1988 and says he is really enjoying his time there.
Fr Dan continues to celebrate daily mass and hears confessions each week.
