Limerick man elected Glenstal Abbot

The Benedictine monks of Glenstal Abbey in Limerick have elected Br Mark Patrick Hederman to be their Abbot for a term of eight years.

Born in Ballingarry, County Limerick, Br Hederman is a former pupil and headmaster of the order's boarding school, and has also taught in America and Nigeria.

He will succeed Br Christopher Dillon who is retiring after 16 years in office.

The role will involve managing a boarding school for boys, plus a farm and a guest house which form part of the famous abbey.

Br Hederman studied philosophy and theology in France, has written a number of books, and is librarian of Glenstal's library.

The library has undergone extensive redevelopment recently, including the building of conference facilities and information resources.

The new facility has meant that the resources are now more readily available to the wider community, and a series of distance learning and adult education courses are due to start this autumn.

The famous monastery was founded beside the village of Murroe, 20km from Limerick City, in 1927 by monks from the Belgian Abbey of Maredsous.

Taking the Rule of Saint Benedict as their guide, the monks gather five times a day in the church for Mass and Divine Office.
