Catechesis grows in Waterford

The Diocese of Waterford and Lismore continues to grow as a community on their journey along the pastoral plan for parishes.

The pastoral plan identified the home, school and parish working in partnership as the best method of faith formation.

In the Catholic Schools across Ireland, religious education is an important resource in the task of communicating Faith. It is the individual teachers in each classroom who bring the programme of faith to life.

In Waterford, Sr Antoinette Dilworth co-ordinates Catechesis in the 99 Catholic Primary Schools in the Diocese.

Sr Antoinette, with a team of Diocesan Advisors, visits each school to support the teachers in their role as religious educators.

Support is offered through visiting the classrooms to meet with the children, and where necessary, provide help and advice to the individual teachers.

Sr Antoinette says ''there is great work being done in religious education, however it is important that teachers are given continual support and formation''.

She says there is ''great fertile ground out there in the schools and parishes. The principals and teachers are so welcoming and the children are delightful. It is a resource to be nurtured for the future.''
