An anti-rape poster showing a naked woman in a Christ-like pose has raised a storm in Milan.
The poster, commissioned by Italy's rape crisis helpline Telefono Donna, has been slammed by conservative politicians who have vowed to stop it going up around the city later this month.
''I'll do everything in my power to stop this poster going up,'' said the city council's billboard pointman, Maurizio Cadeo.
Cadeo and other right-wing councillors said the poster was ''blasphemous'' and would offend religious feelings.
The founder of Telefono Donna, Stefania Bartochetti, said she was surprised by the objections because the poster had already been OK'd - a contention Cadeo denied.
''As a Catholic I can't see anything offensive or blasphemous,'' Bartocchetti said, adding that the poster had raised ''no problems'' in any other Italian city.
''We chose a strong image to get more rape victims to speak out''.
Commissioned for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on November 25, the poster shows a naked woman in a Crucifixion pose with a sheet covering the groin area as in classic depictions of the dead Christ.
The sheet bears the question Who Pays For Man's Sins? and the caption reads ''Only 4% of women who suffer sexual violence report their assailants. The other women pay for them too''.
