Combine charity and evangelization, Pope urged Italian confraternities

Pope Benedict XVI met on November 10 with about 40,000 representatives of Italian diocesan confraternities, and encouraged them to continue the work that has enriched the Church for more than a millennium.

The purpose of Christian confraternities, the Pope said, "is better understood if we consider how thye began to be formed in the Middle Ages," at a time when they were few institutional programs to help the poor. These Christian groups, the Holy Father continued, organized charitable efforts "to put into practice the commandment of love."

Today the same need is acute, in a time of great social change, Pope Benedict said.

He asked the members of the Italian groups to combine their charitable efforts with an effort to promote the "new evangelization."

"They should, he said, be "ferment and leaven in society, contributing to the creation of that spiritual rebirth in which we all hope." +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
