Brady's bomb fear

Catholic Primate Archbishop Sean Brady has revealed one of his worst moments was travelling to Belfast the day after an IRA bomb had devastated Canary Wharf, describing the day as "scary".

The Archbishop spoke ahead of travelling to the Vatican later this month where he will be nominated as a Cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI.

He admitted to being "slighty nervous" about the ceremony, but said he had received "encouraging messages from right across the board" .

Dr Brady spoke about his appointment as Catholic Primate of All-Ireland at a time of political tensions in Northern Ireland.

He said: "I came at a time of tension. It was a whole new scene and I was meeting political and government representatives for the first time, and going to inter-church meetings.

"One of the worst days was having to go to Belfast for a down the line interview with [Church of Ireland] Archbishop Eames on the day after the Canary Wharf bomb.

"That was scary. Thankfully things have improved greatly, and I am much more relaxed now, as I know the scene better." +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
