Grandparents prayer goes global

The Papal Prayer for Grandparents, inspired by the organiser of the Knock Grandparents pilgrimage, is to be translated into all world languages.

Following the success of the annual event begun by Catherine Wiley, herself a grandmother from Murrisk, Co Mayo, the Vatican has announced its intention to offer the prayer for use in Catholic schools all over the world to celebrate Grandparents Day.

Responding to the news, Catherine said: ''We are delighted that the Vatican has recognised the great need there is for honouring grandparents in the Church. It illustrates what has been achieved by the grandparents who attended the two pilgrimages in Knock. Other countries have now started to hold National Grandparents Pilgrimages too.''

Through Catherine's efforts, the National pilgrimage to Knock for grandparents was launched in 2007, bringing 5,000 people to the Mayo shrine. That figure was more than doubled in 2008.

The success of the event saw Catherine invited to the Vatican to address a Plenary Session of the Pontifical Council on the value of celebrating grandparents, who she has described as ''as the glue that holds so many Irish families together.''

Catherine has been invited to recite the Papal Prayer for Grandparents at the 6th World Meeting for Families in Mexico on January 17, an event which is expected to gather 1 million people.
