German Protestant bishop 'disappointed' on talks with Catholics

Wolfgang Huber says that after 15 years as Berlin's Protestant bishop and six years heading the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) he regrets there was not more progress in ecumenism with the Roman Catholic Church during his tenure.

"We have had difficulties in the last 10 years," Huber said in a 27 October interview with Ecumenical News International in Ulm during a meeting of the EKD's highest governing body, its synod, that marked his retirement as EKD chairperson.

Huber noted that on 31 October 1999 in Augsburg, the Lutheran World Federation and the Catholic Church had signed an agreement about the doctrine of justification, a key doctrinal difference at the time of the 16th-century Protestant Reformation.
