John Paul II fast-tracked for sainthood: Report

Pope John Paul II could be beatified in October 2010, according to a report.

That would propel the previous pope on the road to sainthood only five years after his death.

ABC News reported today that the secret investigation that precedes the beatification of any potential saint was put into motion by the Catholic Church on Tuesday.

All those seeking sainthood must first be approved by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.

That includes a cataloguing of miracles and the scouring of printed works for orthodoxy.

Given that Pope John Paul II composed a large body of writings during his 59 years as an ordained minister, that process could be lengthy.

After a perusal of auspicious dates, ABC's Vatican correspondent Phoebe Natanson suggests the likely announcement of beatification could come on Oct. 17, 2010.

The date falls 31 years plus a day after Karol Woytyla became Pope John Paul II.

It also falls on a day when many of the Church's top officials will be in Rome for a Middle Eastern Synod.
