David Say, former Anglican Bishop of Rochester for 27 years from 1961, and who died in 2006, is to have a stone monument in his honour.
The memorial stone is to be dedicated at Rochester Cathedral, England's second oldest, having been founded in 604AD by Bishop Justus, in memory of the town’s long-serving former bishop, David Say.
The member of the House of Lords until his retirement in 1988 will have a dedication of his memorial stone in a service at the cathedral, at 3.15pm on Saturday.
“There hasn’t been another memorial there for the best part of 50 years, and I’m sure my father would have been very pleased and honoured too,” said Mr Say’s son William, 56.
He said that his father cared very much for the people and clergy he was responsible for, and “I’m sure the inscription on the stone is something he would have felt would be useful for the people to read” and he remembered his catchphrase: “It says ‘alleluia, on we go’, which was his catchphrase, as such. It’s a religious phrase, but it’s meant to encourage people. It means don’t be overwhelmed by the problems of today, and always look out for hope.”
David Say was also a very modest man but was never afraid to speak his mind, and he was held in great respect and affection by a great many people said his son. “My father gave his life to the Church and its people, and he loved Kent.
“He was very much someone to look up to, in more ways than one, and was a very proficient Christian and leader. He was a man of action” he added.
The former Bishop of Rochester was ordained as a deacon on December 22, 1939, and became a priest just 10 days later on New Year’s Day, 1940.
Michael James Nazir-Ali (born 19 August 1949) is the current Pakistani-born Bishop of Rochester.
