By this one presumes that he thinks we could all die out if these two preferences become yet more pronounced, but this seems a bit strong, even for someone who’s spent the latter part of his adult life in Italy.
But Benedict, 81 and elected Pope at the age of 78, has succeeded in heating up an old debate and gays, lesbians and others have flooded the airways to describe him as a mad old bird.
Among the ‘more in sorrow than anger’ comments are those from transgender former Italian MP Vladimir Luxuria, now a she, who described his comments as “hurtful.”
But Benedict, noted as much for his Catholic intellectual brain (he’s a former professor) as the fancy footwear he delights in, is not frightened of a bit of opposition.
His views, he says firmly, are not “out of date metaphysics” but an expression of God’s will.
Next year he visits the Holy Land. Will he be as forthright on the equally vexed question of the Israelis and the Palestinians?
As a former member of the Hitler Youth (he had no choice, all German boys were enlisted after 1941), his Middle Eastern visit will be closely monitored, to put it mildly.
