Bookmaker offers Aussie trifecta for Westminster

Irish online bookmaker, Paddy Power, is quoting Sydney Cardinal George Pell at 16/1 for next bishop of Westminster but Melbourne Auxiliary Bishop Peter Elliott is even shorter priced at 12/1.

It is unprecedented to have even one Aussie talked about for appointment as England's top Catholic churchman, but three is incredible, The Australian says.

Cardinal Pell is quoted at 16/1, but Bishop Peter Elliott of Melbourne is even shorter priced at 12/1. Rounding out the field is Bishop Anthony Fisher, from Sydney, at 40/1.

All three men spent some time studying as postgraduates at Oxford, so they are not strangers to England and the English, the paper says.

"But it still raises the question of whether the Catholic Church in England is really so bereft of talent to have to poach a colonial for its top job?

"Many Church observers think it is, at least at the exulted episcopal level," columnist D.D. McNicoll concludes.
