Marriage problems for Bishop

Bishop Willie Walsh could face the prospect of a €4 million fine or up to 6 months in prison if found guilty of operating a cartel for pre-marriage courses in the diocese.

The Competition Authority is monitoring development in the diocese after Bishop Walsh banned all non-religious marriage courses from being accepted by the Catholic Church in Killaloe.

The bishop, who is also the head of the Accord agency, has confirmed that only the marriage courses ran by Accord and the Redemptorist Fathers are now to accepted by priests in the Killaloe Diocese.
