The bishop of the Mexican city of Saltillo, Raul Vera, a prominent human rights advocate, called on Catholics and Christians to recognize the dignity of gays and lesbians and called on the faithful not to unleash a homophobic campaign.
In statements collected by the daily Milenio, Vera said that the gay-lesbian community is suffering "the greatest discrimination" and therefore called on Catholics to be "in solidarity with those who suffer."
"On the one hand, I had to make clear the meaning of marriage as understood by the Catholic Church and, secondly, I could not let the fury antigay and antilésbica to continue in our society," said Vera.
Vera's work in defence of human rights was recognized last year by the former representative in Mexico of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Amerigo Incalcaterra, who stressed his role in defence of many causes about the protection of Human Rights.
