Bishops have full control over financial affairs

SEVERAL of the 26 Catholic Church dioceses cross county borders, but there is no overlap when it comes to finances.

Each bishop has full powers of administration over his diocese directly from their appointment by Rome. The bishops are all autonomous, and that also includes financial matters.

The Catholic Communications Office confirmed each diocese focuses on its own financial affairs.

Traditionally, bishops have inherited 'bequests' following parishioners' deaths, and each of the parishes makes a contribution from their weekly church collections to the diocesan administration.

Priests' salaries are generally paid out of the monies donated by Mass-goers.
