Ferns convent hermitage expands

Three new private hermitages are to open for personal retreats at a convent in Ferns. Co. Wexford.

They will augment seven hermitages which have been operated for some years by the nuns at St. Aidan's Monastery, who are members of the Family of Adoration order.

Each hermitage harks back to the spartan ‘cells’ to which early Christian monks withdrew for quiet contemplation.

The cells are self-catering and consist of a kitchenette, open fire, electric heating and shower as well as a bedroom.

Three of them cater for couples, and one is equipped for the disabled.

They are available for a modest fee to individuals or groups wishing to make private retreats simply want to take time out in quiet solitude.

The hermitage cluster is beside the monastery's chapel, prayer room and spiritual resource room, all of which patrons can use.

They can avail of day-long Eucharistic adoration, partake in any services or prayers in the convent chapel and are free to talk to the sisters or the other guests or keep to themselves as they please.

People stay for anything from a weekend to eight days and demand is higher in the summer months.

The three new 'hermitages' will be officially opened by Bishop Denis Brennan on Friday next, 5th September.

The monastery can be contacted at 053-9366634 or at staidansferns@eircom.net.
