The Pope's representative to Ireland has promised decisive action from the Vatican in the wake of the Dublin Report.It comes as Cardinal Seán Brady and Archbishop Diarmuid Martin have been summoned to a crisis summit at the Vatican to brief the Pope on the ongoing fallout from the Dublin Report.
Speaking after a meeting at the Department of Foreign Affairs this week, Archbishop Giuseppe Leanza said the Vatican was shocked and dismayed by the findings.
He confirmed that Pope Benedict XVI will give his response to the crisis after he is briefed by Cardinal Brady and Archbishop Martin.
The two Churchmen will also hold key talks with senior members of the Roman Curia to assess the Church's response.
Archbishop Leanza said mistakes had been made but the Church had condemned clerical child abuse and the Vatican had already apologised for hurt caused.
The Papal Nuncio also admitted that he should have responded to a letter from the Murphy Commission formally. Much public comment has focused on his refusal to answer a letter from Judge Yvonne Murphy.
However, Archbishop Leanza said he felt at the time that he did not need to respond to the Commission's letter, which he felt was forwarded to him for information purposes.
Meanwhile, prominent Catholic and Irish Ambassador for conflict resolution Nuala O'Loan has said ''the arrogance of those who did not respond for protocol reasons is mystifying and profoundly disturbing''.
Writing in her regular column in The Irish Catholic this week, Mrs O'Loan said: ''My understanding of the essence of the role of a Nuncio is to be a liaison between Rome and the country to which the Nuncio is sent - someone who can make things happen when they need to happen.''
''If this is not the case - if the function is simply to wine and dine, to dress magnificently on State occasions and to circulate in the corridors of power, then this is not a function which in any way serves the people of the Church.
''It is just another betrayal and the funding of the office of Nuncio in Ireland is quite simply not justified,'' she said.
Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin has informed the Nuncio that the Government expects the Vatican to respond fully to the questions asked by the Murphy Commission.
Mr Martin said the Vatican needs to respond substantially and comprehensively to the questions posed by the commission and he said it should do so as soon as possible.
Minister Martin said he had sought a commitment from the Archbishop that the church would co-operate fully with upcoming the Cloyne inquiry.
