US nuns to help run Wexford parish

An American order of nuns is to help out with running a parish in County Wexford.

Three members of the Sisters of the Word Incarnate have arrived to help the Church ministry in Bunclody and will be formally inaugurated at a ceremony in the village’s Church of the Most Holy Trinity next Sunday (November 8).

Sister Light, Sister Ostrabrama and Sister Esquipulas have moved into a house in Carrigduff in the parish which has been donated to them by a parishioner.

The Sisters of the Word Incarnate order was founded in Argentina and two priests from its male arm - Fr Baros and Fr Baumann are already working in Kilmyshall in the same diocese.

Two of the nuns who will work in Bunclody are American and the third is a native of Guatemala.

Welcoming the extra assistance, PP Fr Aidan Jones said the arrival of the three nuns was “quite an addition to the parish”.

“They are parish workers and they are here for the long haul,” he remarked.

Fr Jones said he was impressed with the ability of the Sisters of the Word Incarnate to attract vocations where the traditional orders familiar in Ireland have suffered from an ageing profile and dwindling numbers.

The three sisters will help with duties such as liturgy in the church (one of them is an organist), visiting the sick and housebound and helping teachers in the parish’s schools with preparing classes for First Communion and Confirmation.
