Scottish Bishop in line to be UK's top Catholic clergyman

THE Bishop of Paisley is in the running to take over as the UK's top Catholic clergyman.

The Right Rev Philip Tartaglia, 57, is tipped as the next Archbishop of Westminster.

His conservative views are believed to be favoured by Pope Benedict XVI and some see him as an ideal successor to the present Archbishop, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor.

Bishop Tartaglia took up his position in September 2005.

A Church insider said: "The Archbishop of Birmingham, the Most Rev Vincent Nichols, is favourite to take over from the cardinal, expected to step down early next year.

"But Bishop Tartaglia is in the equation because he would be guaranteed to bring the Catholic Church in England back to its Latin roots, which would find favour with Rome.

"What has also brought him into the frame are his right-wing views. He has courted controversy by criticising Labour policies such as no-fault divorce and same-sex marriage."
