Former priest pleads guilty to abuse

A former priest has pleaded guilty at the Circuit Criminal Court in Tralee to 53 counts of indecently assaulting three women and two men.

Some of the offences date back over 40 years and occurred between 1965 and 1974 when the victims were children.

Judge Carroll Moran made an order preventing publication of the former priest's identity in order to protect the identities of his victims.

However he said it was undesirable as a matter or principle to have secrecy in a case and he said he would review his ruling in relation to the identity of the defendant when he sentences him next January.
