New Irish charity seeking 250 building volunteers

A new international NGO is looking for 250 volunteers to join a first mission to build houses for poor people in Haiti.

Haven, founded by businessman and entrepreneur Leslie Buckley and his wife Carmel, aims to tackle poverty in the developing world by building houses and implementing community development programmes.

The new charity will start work in Haiti, where less than three in ten people have access to basic health care and 40 percent of people often go hungry.

The project aims to build 1,000 new homes and refurbish 2,000 more in Haiti by the end of 2011.

Haven founder, Leslie Buckley, a business consultant who chairs Denis O'Brien's Digicel group, and who personally committed a million of his own money to the charity said: ''I know that this year is proving difficult for many people, but I hope that given the opportunity to change the life of a poor Haitian family forever for the better, Irish people will respond in their droves.''

The volunteers have to raise €4,000 prior to leaving for Haiti and must be fit to work in a tropical climate.

Volunteers who wish to sign up for ''Build-It-Week'' should phone 01 - 4333930 or go to the website www.havenpartnership.com
