News of the account emerged as the pontiff visited the town of Assisi in Italy to pray at the shrine of Saint Francis, whose name he took when he was elected pope.
During his visit, the 76-year-old gave a speech in which he said the Roman Catholic Church needed to rid itself of all "vanity, arrogance and pride" and humbly serve the poorest in society.

He told his audience: "Many of you have been
stripped by this savage world that does not give employment, that does
not help, that does not care if there are children in the world who are
dying of hunger, does not care if so many families have nothing to eat. This is a good occasion to invite the Church to strip itself of worldliness. There is a danger that threatens everyone in the Church, all of us. The danger of worldliness. It leads us to vanity, arrogance and pride."
