The Vatican says the 100-foot (30-meter)-tall tree has come from the forests of the Ardennes in Wallonia, Belgium.
The tree was trucked in Friday, with the official lighting ceremony set for Dec. 18.
The tree will be adorned with white and gold ornaments.
It stands beside a life-size nativity scene that will be unveiled on Christmas Eve.
Christmas trees have only been placed in the square since 1982, when Polish-born Pope John Paul II began the northern European tradition.
