Pope loses his voice

Pope Benedict XVI has not escaped one of the winter bugs that has been spreading through Italy and was forced to croak his way through his weekly address on Wednesday.

''Unfortunately I've lost my voice, but I'll try to make myself understood,'' the 81-year-old pontiff told the crowd gathered for a general audience in the Paul VI auditorium.

Italy's flu season officially got under way in November, but doctors expect it to peak at the middle of January.
